Navigating Onsite Traffic Safely: Your Role in Pedestrian Safety

Understanding the Campaign Focus: Your Safety is Paramount

In the realm of workplace safety, On-site Traffic Management (OSTM) poses a significant concern across various industries. If the risks associated with OSTM are not appropriately addressed, there is a potential for serious injury or fatalities among pedestrians.

In 2020, WorCover Queensland conducted a focused campaign on OSTM systems, targeting high-risk workplaces where mobile plant operations, such as forklifts and motor vehicles, intersect with pedestrian activities. Inspectors visited workplaces spanning diverse industries like construction, retail, depots, distribution centers, manufacturing, and rural sectors. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of traffic management controls.

Inspectors evaluated the efficiency of existing systems and controls implemented to mitigate the risk of vehicle-pedestrian collisions. Some examples of scrutinized systems and controls included the presence of separate routes for pedestrians and vehicles, distinct areas designated for loading and unloading goods away from pedestrian zones, spacious traffic routes to prevent vehicles from entering pedestrian areas, the use of barriers, fences, or exclusion zones to isolate workers or pedestrians from vehicles and mobile plant, enforcement of speed limits, adherence to traffic signage, verification of high-risk work licenses for mobile plant operators, and the maintenance of mobile plant.
