Initiative Overview In 2012 and 2014-15, WorkCover Queensland spearheaded two campaigns to enhance the understanding of both employees and employers regarding the hazards associated with securing and releasing loads on heavy vehicles.
Campaign Objectives The primary objectives of these campaigns were to:
- Mitigate work-related traumatic injuries and musculoskeletal disorders in Queensland.
- Identify areas for improvement in current practices.
- Collaborate with the industry to implement new processes that enhance safety.
Throughout the campaigns, 427 comprehensive workplace assessments were conducted across Queensland from 2012 to 2015. These assessments covered the handling, loading, and unloading of various freight types, including general, steel, and concrete products, as well as timber and logs. The examination also encompassed the use of gates, curtains, and tie-down equipment like chains, webbing, and tensioners. A significant focus was placed on the securement and release of loads using dogs and cheater bars.
