Supporting an Ageing Workforce: Securing Your Health and Career

Currently, 3.9% of the Queensland workforce is aged 65 and over, and this proportion is expected to rise based on census data trends. With the largest employed age group ranging from 45 to 64 years, managing an aging workforce is becoming increasingly important in Australian workplaces.

To effectively support and retain aging workers, employers need to implement appropriate support systems and processes that cater to their health, safety, and well-being needs. A survey conducted by the Office of Industrial Relations and the Australian National University revealed that, despite awareness of aging workers, workplaces often lack the necessary resources and planning to accommodate their diverse needs. The Ageing Workforce Report, based on a survey of 1017 people in management positions across various industries, emphasizes the need for proactive measures.

While aging itself is not a new phenomenon, the increasing longevity of individuals necessitates a shift in workplace practices. The extended period of employment for individuals requires workplaces to adapt to the needs of an aging workforce for sustained viability. Managing the health, safety, and well-being of aging workers presents an opportunity to create productive and inclusive workplaces for people of all ages. As individuals stay in the workforce for longer periods, their ability and confidence in performing certain tasks may change. This is influenced by factors such as the design and organization of work, the nature of the tasks, the support provided, and efforts made to manage their health.
