Protecting Your Well-being and Future Compensation: Using Walk-Behind Milling Machines and Floor Grinders

When you operate walk-behind milling machines or floor grinders on concrete or other materials containing silica, it's important to acknowledge that this activity can produce respirable crystalline silica dust. Inhaling these tiny silica particles over time can lead to irreversible lung damage.

To address potential exposure, WorkCover Queensland recommends the following controls in accordance with Appendix 4 of the Managing respirable crystalline silica in construction and manufacturing of construction elements code of practice 2022 (PDF, 1.71 MB):

Use suitable engineering controls

Consider the following engineering control options:

  • An integrated water delivery system that continuously supplies water to the cutting surface.
  • A commercially available vacuum dust collection system that:
    • Meets or exceeds the minimum air flow requirements recommended by the tool manufacturer.
    • Is rated to either M-Class or H-Class.

Regardless of the chosen control method, ensure that the milling machine or grinder is operated and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions to minimize dust emissions.

Wet methods

Employing wet methods is effective in reducing airborne silica dust during milling or grinding of silica-containing materials, as it controls exposure at the source. Walk-behind milling machines and floor grinders should be equipped with an integrated water delivery system for continuous water supply to the cutting surface.

Clean up slurry promptly before it dries, using shovels or a wet vacuum, to prevent the release of silica dust into the air.

Dust collection system

Commercially available dust collection systems have demonstrated efficacy in reducing silica exposure. When using a machine equipped with a dust collection system, ensure proper operation and maintenance according to the manufacturer's instructions to minimize dust emissions.

The dust collector must:

  • Provide the airflow recommended by the manufacturer or greater.
  • Be rated to either M-Class or H-Class in accordance with AS/NZS 60335.2.69.

When operating indoors or in an enclosed area, use a dust collector with either M-Class or H-Class in accordance with AS/NZS 60335.2.69 to remove loose dust between passes.

Select appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE)

Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is not required when using walk-behind milling machines and floor grinders.
