Your Responsibility in Lab Safety

In the realm of laboratories, WorkCover Queensland recognizes the distinct challenge of managing safety due to the presence of numerous hazardous chemicals, albeit in relatively small quantities.

Considerations for using hazardous chemicals in laboratories include:

  1. Obtain specific storage requirements from the material's manufacturer or supplier at the time of purchase.

  2. Adhere to the manufacturer's specifications, as outlined in the safety data sheet (SDS), when storing each substance.

  3. Ensure availability of SDS for all hazardous chemicals used, stored, and handled.

  4. Appropriately label hazardous chemicals used in laboratories.

  5. Avoid using fume cupboards for storing hazardous chemicals.

Given that most laboratories are now equipped with air conditioning, controlled temperature, and humidity options, adequate ventilation is generally provided for chemical storage and handling. However, in the event of major spills outside a fume cupboard, emergency procedures, including evacuation, isolation of shared air conditioning systems, and cleanup measures, must be in place.

For chemical storage facilities without air conditioning, forced dilution ventilation or sufficient natural ventilation, determined by a risk assessment, should be in place to address potential leaks or spills. Implement spill control measures where liquids are stored, with bunds designed as part of the building being a convenient form of spill control.

When storing corrosive or reactive materials, ensure the storage space is constructed of inert materials. If not feasible, design the building to allow for component replacement. Proper segregation of incompatible materials in laboratories is essential.

Buildings storing flammable liquids or substances that may burn outside of class 3 (primary or subsidiary risk within the Australian Dangerous Goods Code) must be constructed of non-flammable materials.

Conduct electrical work in accordance with AS/NZS 3000:2000 Electrical installations (Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules), which may require the installation of flameproof switches.

Label all materials in the store appropriately to enhance safety protocols.
