In 2020, WorCover Queensland initiated an Onsite Traffic Management (OSTM) campaign, specifically addressing pedestrian safety around vehicles and mobile plant in high-risk workplaces, where forklifts and motor vehicles operate near pedestrians.
Workplace visits spanned various industries like construction, retail, depots, distribution centers, manufacturing, and rural sectors. The goal was to assess the effectiveness of traffic management controls. Inspectors evaluated systems and controls aimed at minimizing the risk of vehicle-pedestrian collisions. This encompassed aspects such as distinct pedestrian and vehicle routes, dedicated zones for loading and unloading away from pedestrians, spacious traffic routes preventing vehicle intrusion into pedestrian areas, and the presence of barriers or exclusion zones. The inspection also considered enforcement of speed limits, proper traffic signage, verification of high-risk work licenses for mobile plant operators, and the maintenance of mobile plant.
