Safety Concern: Risk of fire and electric shock. The electrical cable has been identified with an issue in its insulation and sheathing PVC compound, leading to a potential reduction in insulation integrity. Over time or when exposed to prolonged heat, the cable insulation can become brittle. Disturbance of the cable may cause it to crack, posing a risk of electric shock and contributing to fire hazards.
Product Distribution: This cable was distributed in Queensland during 2012–13 through:
- Masters Home Improvement
- Home Timber and Hardware
- Mitre 10
- HEM Queensland.
Prohibition Status: Infinity electrical cable is prohibited in Queensland, indicating that it should not be sold or installed.
Recommended Actions:
Suppliers/Installers:
- Suppliers have agreed to remove or remediate the cable at their expense due to the importer being in liquidation.
- Electrical contractors must contact the cable supplier before commencing work to ensure agreement among the property owner, supplier, and electrician.
Unused Stock:
- If you possess unused stock of the affected cable, refrain from using it and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement.
Installed Cable:
- If Infinity cable was installed in Queensland between 2012 and 2013, contact the customer and arrange for an inspection of their premises.
- Confirm the presence of Infinity cable, notify the customer about the recall, and instruct them to contact the electrician, builder, or cable supplier directly (if known).
Remediation:
- Seek supplier approval before conducting remediation work on the customer's premises.
- Alternatively, the supplier may engage another electrical contractor for remediation, following the recall plan and complying with normal electrical work requirements.
- If customers choose not to take action, inform them that the supplier will fund remediation or replacement at the supplier's expense.
The safety recall entails:
- Prioritizing the removal and replacement of cable near heat sources.
- Replacing accessible cable in areas like roof spaces and under flooring (unless appropriately enclosed in conduit).
- Safeguarding all remaining cable with electrical safety switches.
- Affixing a warning sticker to the electrical metering switch box in premises with remaining installed cable.
Homeowners should:
- Check with their electrical contractor, builder, or contact a licensed electrical contractor for a safety inspection.
- Avoid personally inspecting the cable and rely on an electrical contractor for a thorough examination.
